Deploy to US West: Best for Pacific Rim Users

US West deployment makes sense for applications serving the West Coast of North America, or for Pacific Rim connections to Asia. While US East has more provider options, US West has excellent connectivity to Asia via transpacific cables.

Fly.io's US West region is primarily Los Angeles (lax). For West Coast US users, this provides the lowest latency.

AWS US West Regions

• Northern California (us-west-1): The original AWS region. Some legacy services only available here.
• Oregon (us-west-2): The preferred US West region. Most services, better pricing, good for multi-AZ deployments.

When US West Beats US East

• West Coast US users are your primary audience
• You're connecting to Asian APIs (lower latency to Tokyo from US West via transpacific cables)
• Your content has strict data residency requirements (CCPA rather than GDPR)

Best Practice

Unless you have specific reasons to choose US West, US East is usually the better default for North American deployments. The provider ecosystem is larger and pricing more competitive.
